Erectile dysfunction can be frustrating, embarrassing and damaging to confidence. A single difficult experience may create anxiety about the next one—and that anxiety can itself make it harder to become or remain aroused.
I offer confidential hypnotherapy, NLP and mindset support for men whose erectile difficulties involve anxiety, pressure, confidence, previous experiences or automatic patterns of thinking.
Erectile dysfunction can also have physical or medication-related causes. If it happens repeatedly, it is important to speak to your GP or another medically qualified professional before assuming that the problem is purely psychological.

Ask a Question
What Is Erectile Dysfunction?
Erectile dysfunction, sometimes called ED or impotence, means regularly having difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity.
Most men experience occasional erection difficulties. Tiredness, alcohol, stress or an unusual situation may temporarily affect sexual response.
When it happens repeatedly, possible contributing factors include:
- Performance anxiety
- Pressure to satisfy a partner
- Fear of losing the erection
- Previous difficult sexual experiences
- Relationship tension
- Low confidence or self-esteem
- Depression or low mood
- Alcohol or drug use
- Medication side effects
- Diabetes, cardiovascular or hormonal conditions
- Changes in blood supply or nerve function
Often, physical and psychological influences overlap.

The Performance-Anxiety Cycle
Erections are automatic bodily responses. The more someone tries to consciously force or monitor that response, the more difficult it may become.
A typical pattern is:
- An erection is lost or does not develop as expected.
- The experience feels embarrassing or alarming.
- The person worries that it will happen again.
- During the next sexual situation, attention moves towards monitoring.
- Anxiety and self-consciousness interfere with arousal.
- The original fear appears to be confirmed.
This can lead to overthinking, avoidance and reduced confidence. Sex gradually becomes a test rather than a shared experience.
How Hypnotherapy May Help
Hypnotherapy can help when erectile difficulties are being maintained or intensified by anxiety, pressure or learned emotional responses.
Sessions may focus on:
- Reducing performance anxiety
- Interrupting erection-checking and self-monitoring
- Building sexual confidence
- Responding differently to previous difficult experiences
- Reducing fear of disappointing a partner
- Calming automatic stress responses
- Reconnecting attention with sensation and intimacy
- Changing unhelpful beliefs about masculinity or performance
- Developing a more natural and relaxed sexual mindset
The purpose is not to consciously command the body to produce an erection. It is to reduce the mental interference that may be preventing an automatic response.
There May Not Be One Hidden Root Cause
The previous version of this page suggested that ED probably had one subconscious root cause. In reality, sexual response is more complicated.
There may be one important experience, but there may also be several interacting factors: tiredness, relationship pressure, anxiety, alcohol, medication, confidence, expectations and physical health.
Our work looks at the complete pattern rather than forcing everything into one explanation.
Medical Assessment Matters
According to the NHS, recurring erectile dysfunction can be associated with conditions including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes and hormone problems. It can also be a side effect of medication.
Consulting your GP does not mean the problem cannot be psychological. It simply ensures that important physical factors are not overlooked.
Do not stop prescribed medication because you believe it may be affecting sexual function. Discuss your concerns with the prescribing clinician.
Once physical health has been appropriately considered, hypnotherapy may complement medical treatment by addressing anxiety and confidence.
Related Sexual and Emotional Issues
Erectile dysfunction can overlap with premature ejaculation, changes in desire, relationship concerns and more general male issues.
It may also be connected with anxiety, depression, guilt or a harsh inner voice.
Sessions are private, respectful and focused on what is relevant to you. You will not be judged or expected to disclose unnecessary intimate detail.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can hypnotherapy help erectile dysfunction?
It may help when anxiety, confidence, pressure or learned emotional responses are contributing to the difficulty.
Should I see my GP first?
If erectile dysfunction is recurring, yes. A medical assessment can identify or rule out physical and medication-related factors.
Will I have to discuss every detail?
No. We discuss enough to understand the pattern and work responsibly, but you control what you disclose.
How many sessions will I need?
That varies. Some people notice changes relatively quickly, while more complex physical, emotional or relationship factors may require additional support.
Can I attend while using ED medication?
Yes, but medication decisions remain between you and the clinician or pharmacist responsible for your care.
Are online sessions available?
Yes. Online sessions offer the same confidential approach as appointments in Reading and Didcot.
