Antidepressant Tapering and Withdrawal
Some people experience significant withdrawal symptoms when reducing or stopping antidepressant medication, particularly when reductions are made too quickly. The appropriate rate of tapering varies considerably, and people who have taken antidepressants for a long time may need smaller reductions over a much longer period.
I can offer complementary emotional and mindset support to people who are considering or undergoing an antidepressant taper. However, I do not prescribe medication or devise, manage or medically supervise tapering schedules.
Any decision to reduce or discontinue antidepressants should be discussed with the prescribing clinician. If you feel that the proposed reduction is too rapid, or your withdrawal symptoms are not being recognised, you may also wish to seek advice from a clinician or service with specialist knowledge of psychiatric-drug withdrawal.
Further specialist information and support is available through DrugTaper. DrugTaper is based in the United States, so its medical services and prescribing arrangements may differ from those in the UK.
For further UK information, see the Royal College of Psychiatrists’ guidance on stopping antidepressants.
