CrossFit is unique because it combines strength, skill, metabolic conditioning, movement complexity and competitive pressure — all under high fatigue and time stress.
Even highly capable athletes experience:
- Overthinking during complex movements
- Panic under time caps
- Poor pacing during AMRAPs & EMOMs
- Negative self-talk during fatigue
- Skill collapse when gas tank empties
- Grip failure & technical breakdowns
- Confidence dips after “no reps”
- Competition nerves
- Fear of injury during heavy lifts
- Burnout during training cycles
CrossFit performance problems are rarely about strength or conditioning alone — they’re about how the mind and nervous system behave under metabolic stress.
I help CrossFit athletes improve performance using:
- Cognitive performance psychology
- Mind-body nervous system regulation
- Skill execution under metabolic load
- Flow-state training
- Arousal & pacing control
- Competition mindset coaching
- Adapted hypnotherapy (non-visual)
This is mental performance coaching built for CrossFit athletes, not generic sports psychology. It applies my sports performance mindset coaching to the demands of WODs and competition.

What This Helps With
CrossFit athletes come to me for help with:
- Competition nerves
- “Redline panic” during WODs
- No-rep frustration
- Skill breakdown under fatigue
- Pacing discipline
- Ring/rack fear responses
- Confidence with max lifts
- Emotional drops mid-event
- Burnout in heavy training cycles
- Post-open or post-Comp depression
- Fear of “blowing up” early in workouts
If you’ve ever spiralled after a no-rep or blown up during the engine part of a WOD — you already know this isn’t purely physical. Pacing and focus under fatigue also feature in triathlon performance coaching, while maintaining technical execution under competition pressure is explored in track and field performance coaching.
Why CrossFit Performance Breaks Down
CrossFit combines three stressors:
1. Metabolic Stress
Anaerobic + aerobic switching → cognitive bandwidth drops → skill errors appear.
2. Technical Skill Under Fatigue
High complexity during exhaustion:
- gymnastics
- oly lifting
- CTB / TTB
- muscle-ups
- handstand work
= skill collapse + no reps if the brain freezes.
3. Ego & Social Evaluation
Leaderboards, whiteboards, class environment and comps create:
- comparison pressure
- perfectionism
- fear of looking weak
- pacing anxiety
Result:
- early redline → panic → technique decay
- self-talk turns negative
- performance craters before capacity does
A Modern, Mind-Body Performance Approach
🔹 Cognitive Performance
For:
- pacing intelligence
- self-talk & confidence
- no-rep resilience
- competition mindset
- motor learning under stress
🔹 Flow-State Training
For:
- movement economy
- timing & rhythm
- barbell cycling
- gymnastics under fatigue
- staying loose mentally
🔹 Nervous System Regulation
For:
- redline control
- arousal management
- fear responses (rings, bar, upside-down)
- post-event decompression
🔹 Adapted Hypnotherapy (Non-Visual)
For:
- subconscious integration
- identity & confidence
- injury-recovery mindset
- burnout recovery
Works even for aphantasia — no visualisation required.
Useful For
All CrossFit contexts, including:
- Classes
- Qualifiers
- Throwdowns
- Opens
- Semi-finals
- Competing
- Olympic lifting crossover
- Gymnastics progressions
And athlete types:
- Engine athletes
- Strength athletes
- Skill specialists
- Coaches
Common CrossFit Patterns
These patterns are shockingly universal:
- Over-pacing engine workouts (fear of redline)
- Under-pacing strength workouts (fear of failure)
- No-rep tilt → mental spiral
- Handstand panic (upside-down threat response)
- Bar muscle-up fear (risk perception)
- Redline shutdown (nervous system defense)
The brain cares about threat, not leaderboard position.
The Mental Side of CrossFit
Elite CrossFit athletes train their minds as well as their strength, endurance and technical skills. Gretchen Kittelberger, who competed at the CrossFit Games, has spoken about working with sports psychologist Sharon Petro after finding that watching her position on the leaderboard was damaging her confidence. Their work helped Kittelberger rebuild confidence, reduce distractions and remain focused on her own performance. She also used visualisation, mentally rehearsing movements and recreating how performing them successfully should feel before attempting them — a technique she originally developed during her background in gymnastics.
The importance of mindset is also embedded within CrossFit’s own coaching philosophy. CrossFit coach Greg Amundson has written about studying the mental habits of leading CrossFit athletes and observing the importance of constructive self-talk, realistic goal-setting, optimism and mental toughness. More recently, CrossFit has explicitly described mental fitness as something that can be trained and coached, including learning to recognise automatic reactions to anxiety, frustration and self-doubt and choosing a more useful response. That is particularly relevant in CrossFit, where athletes repeatedly have to maintain concentration and confidence while experiencing fatigue, discomfort and competitive pressure.
